Ferdinand Reich. Portrait of Ferdinand Reich, German physicist (1799-1882). He became professor at the Freiburg School of Mines. Using spectro- scopy in collaboration with Hieronymous Richter, Reich discovered the metal indium in 1863. He studied climate, the Earth's magnetism, and the temperature of sub-surface rocks.
