Telephone service. 728. The proper use of the telephone requires careful train-ing. Care should be taken In selecting operators; the menshould be tested as to their ability to distinguish sounds ina telephone. The following method is suggested: Enunciate distinctly through the telephone letters whichsound somewhat alike, as B, C, P, T, E, and ascertain whetherthey can be distinguished readily; enunciate a number ofwords beginning with S, such as seven, six, sight, sound; trysuch words as four, more, score, door, bore. 729. After a test of this kind with an instrument in goodorder, try with an instrument which is not working well. 14« 150 I I COMMUNICATIONS. 151 730. After the hearing test, give a number of selected wordsto be sent through the telephone to test the operators abilityto enunciate distinctly. 731. Other qualifications being equal, men should be selectedwho are in the habit of spealiing slowly and distinctly. Aman who raises the pitch of his voice when excited shouldnot be selected. 732. Operators should have a sufficient knowledge of theirinstruments to correct minor defects, such as loose or corrodedcontacts, or bent levers. 733. When preparing for service the operators arrange theirapparatus for communicating and raise and lower the hookswitch. If this operation results in a sharp click in the re-ceiver, the battery is in working order. If no click is heard, the binding post to which the head sets are connected shouldbe examined and tightened. If the hook test indicates thatthere is no battery on the line, the operator must notify theelectric
