It is beheved that AlnwickCastle was founded by the Romans, the foimdations of the buildings, withRoman mouldings, having^ been discovered when a part of the keep wastaken down for repaii-s. The fretwork round the arch leacbng to the imiercouit is evidently of Saxon arcliitectuic, but under the Elag Tower was amore ancient gateway, that had been walled up, dii-ectly fronting the presentoutward gateway into the town.
