When the car is converted froman open to a closed one it is necessary simply to grasp thehandle on the lower section and pull forward until the sectionsare free from the angle iron support, and then one after an-other they fall into their proper places. About 10 minutes isrequired by the motorman and conductor to open up a carwith a 20-ft. body, and the car can be closed in a much shortertime. Sticking of the sash when the posts are slightly out of trueis avoided, as has been said, by making each section narrowerthan the one above it. The two lower sections are in contact. SIDE ELEVATION AND PLAN OF CONVERTIBLE CAR, ALSO SHOWING FLOOR AND PLATFORM FRAMING below the lower sash. When the car is converted to an openone, the three sections between each set of posts are pushedupwards and rest in a pocket between the lower deck roofand the lower deck headlining. The car has been designed toeliminate the usual objection to convertible cars, the stickingof the sash when the posts become slightly out of square, andthis is accomplished by making each section slightly narrowerthan the one above it and arranging each of the two lowerones to slide into guides or channels attached to the sectionabove. On either side of the lower sash, at a distance of ^in. from the edge, a brass channel is screwed, extending thefull height of the sash. When the lower section is raised, bymeans of handles screwed to it, it slides up into these guidesuntil it strikes the closed ends of the channels at the top.
