A black rhinoceros walks across an open grassy field in a south African game park, Eastern Cape South Africa.
This endangered species is seen less commonly than its counterpart white rhinoceros, as it prefers more bushy, less open environments. Black rhinos are browsers and eat twigs, branches, and leaves from various shrubs and trees. The species overall is classified as critically endangered, and three subspecies, one including the western black rhinoceros, were declared extinct by the IUCN in 2011 Today it is totally restricted to protected nature reserves and has vanished from many countries in which it once thrived, especially in the west and north of its former range. The remaining populations are highly scattered.
