Early phonographs first invented by American Thomas Alva Edison in 1877 are on display in Fort Myers, Florida, USA, at his winter estate, which is now a sprawling historical museum where visitors can also see other famous Edison inventions that included incandescent light bulbs and the motion picture camera. His initial phonograph used a rotating cylinder covered with tinfoil to record and play back sound. Later models utilized wax-coated cylinders and were fitted with large horns to amplify the sound.
