It appears from the table that in seven instances approximatelyidentical figures were obtained. Nothing more is needed to enforce the valueof the fermentation process as a clinical test. 3. By Polarisation.—Grape-sugar possesses a dextro-rotatory powerfor polarised light, and upon this fact a quantitative test for that bodyis based. Such a test must necessarily be open to fallacy, inasmuch asthe urine in diabetes is apt to contain other substances, such as /3-oxy-butyric acid and lsevulose, which rotate light in the opposite is well, therefore, in applying it, to do so both before and after fer-mentation (Hoppe-Seyler, Kiilz, Worm-Muller, and K. A. H. Morner),when the difference in the results will be a measure of the quantity ofgrape-sugar in solution. The advantage of the method is that it dis-. wo* Fig. 135.—Flask for the Approximate Estimation of Sugar by Fermentation (J). penses with delay. In recent times it has been invested with greataccuracy by the use of a polarimeter constructed on the principle devisedby Lippich. This instrument is represented in fig. It is em-ployed thus:— The graduated disc is turned towards the observer, and the tubetowards the lamp, and the cap which covers the telescope and theposterior end of the apparatus is removed. The lamp is placed at adistance (45 cm.) equal to the length of the instrument itself. Car-bonate of soda is placed in the cage attached to the lamp, and fuseduntil the receptacle is full. The latter is then fixed in the lamp insuch a way as to be in contact with the flame at the side only, and ascreen is so placed that the light passes only through the aperturein it. THE URINE
