Two flat mirrors (blue) are at right angles to one another. As a beam of light strikes one mirror it is reflected towards the mirror. It strikes the second mirror and is then reflected back along its original direction. A three dimensional corner cube has three mirrors at right angles to each other, so that light coming from any position is reflected back parallel to its original direction.
