John Hill had dealt squarely and fairly with theresidents of the town, making sacrifices that all might have goodtitles to their land, there was from the first an uncertainty in thesituation that gave not a little uneasiness to the inhabitants. TheMason heirs had quitclaimed their interest in the Hillsboroughgrant, yet there stalked in the background the shadow of theAllen Proprietors, as a certain body of men was known and whowere the heirs of the late Gov. Samuel Allen, and who had beenvested with far-reaching rights of territory in his days. Thesegentlemen laid claim to a large portion of the unappropriatedlands in the Masonian grant. The people in this vicinity weregreatly excited and committees were chosen to investigate andconsider the best course to pursue.
