It causedgreat consternation at the North and rejoicing at theSouth. The very next day, as we have seen, the Fed-eral gunboat Monitor engaged the Merrimac anddisabled her. In January of the following year theConfederate privateer, the Alabama, sunk the UnitedStates steamer Hatteras. June 19, 1864, the Kear-sage sunk the Alabama off Cherbourg, France.
