The eagle was considered by the ancient Romans as the bird of the great god Jupiter (Zeus to the Greeks). The laurel wreath was given to victors by the Romans. The Romans often depicted the goddess of victory offering a general a wreath made of laurel. Victorious generals were also awarded laurel crown wreaths. The use of laurel traces its history in ancient Greece and Rome to the myth of the sun god Apollo and his unreturned love for the nymph Daphne. To escape Apollo, Daphne had turned to her father the river god Peneus, and he had turned her into a laurel tree, which became Apollo's sacred tree and whose leaves and branches were thenceforth used by the Greek and Romans to symbolize victory and outstanding achievement.
