Aztec customs, 17th-century artwork. The Aztec Empire was an alliance of three city states that ruled in the highlands plateau area of central Mexico from 1428 until their defeat by Spanish conquistadors in 1521. Artwork from 'Purchas his Piligrimes' (1625), the magnum opus of English cleric Samuel Purchas (). This work, also known as 'Hakluytus Posthumus', was a collection of travel tales seen as a continuation of 'Principal Navigations by Richard Hakluyt.
