Wild marjoram Origanum vulgare
Marjoram is an upright, bushy, purple-tinged, culinary herb. It has a distinctive scent which carries a long way on a hot, still day. The dense rose-purple flower clusters terminate the stems. This plant grows wild in Britain and Europe and is found on lime-rich soils on grassland, hedgebanks or scrub. Marjoram is known as oregano in cooking - is a wonderful plant for a herb garden and looks good in a cottage garden design. Like other members of the mint family it is much visited by bees.
