The final re- p^M-^v anthracite fuel is used for the steam locomotiveand cheap bituminous coal for the stationaryboilers of the electric plant. The conditions as to the use of fuel and thekind of fuel vary so much that each case must betreated by Itself, but for all practical purposes ofcomparison at the present time, it may be as-sumed that the same amount of fuel per ton milewould be used with the electric system as withthe steam locomotives for short lines. If ihe conditions are such that a cheaper classof fuel can be used In the central station than onthe steam locomotive, there maybe a considerablesaving in cost of fuel, while there is no saving inweight of fuel. On the elevated railroads in <Stc^ would be used in either case per ton mile, and itis only where the condiiions demand a higherpriced fuel for the steam locomotive than for thecentral station plant that there would be any sub-stantial saving In cost of fuel per ton mile byusing the electric system at the present time. The first cost of central station plants and con-ductors for the long line work is so great per mileof track as to deter any steam railroad companyfrom making an of changing a largesteam locomotive plant to an electric at prices for this work are now so unsettled thatit would be valueless to give any estimate of costin this paper. Prices are dropping rapidly, andit would not be surprising If one year hence thecost of installing an electric plant for long dis-tance work would be only about one-half of whatit was a year ago. Only on short Hues, where the traffic Is crowdedis it now economical to substitute electricmotors for steam locomotives. Tnere will
