PREFACE. Few Frenchmen, I believe, knew England sointimately as my husband. He had surprised theEnglish character by a happy guess-work beforehe set himself to study it. He looked at Englandfrom within. All that is serious, poetic, andunchangeably romantic in the heart of her wasrevealed to him by its deep reflection in her England sprung from Shakespeare and the Bible,the England of the Border Ballads and of GeorgeEliots novels, this England of sincere romance andstringent moral value, was known to him no less thanthe vast, productive, outward England of industry,commerce, politics, and colonisation. He interpretedthe soul of the one by the soul of the other, andunderstood them both.
