Thomas Brien Haigley Jr., 79, was five years old and living at Schofield Barracks adjacent to Wheeler Army Airfield when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. He is pointing out the name of his father, Thomas Brien Haigley Sr., who was a captain and doctor in the Army Medical Corps, on a roster of Schofield Barracks from 1941. Haggle Sr. had left his son on the porch of their home, near Generals Loop at neighboring Schofield Barracks, to report to the base hospital during the Japanese attack and from there he was sent to the mess hall at Wheeler Field. The building, which stands little changed today, was directly across the street from where a Japanese bomb had torn through the roof of Hanger 3, igniting stacks of ammunition stored there and killing many men in the mess hall for breakfast.
