The lake, 7 km long, formed at the confluence of the Soča and Idrijca rivers after the Soča was dammed. Most na Soči itself stands on a rocky spur above the lake, which is popular with rowers, canoeists and anglers. The Soča, known as ‘The ‘Emerald Beauty’, rises in the Julian Alps and retains its emerald or aquamarine hue throughout its course.
Most na Soči, Littoral region, Slovenia: the tranquil emerald green waters of the beautiful reservoir created by flooding the basins of two rivers for a hydroelectric scheme reflect the well-wooded slopes of low alpine foothills below the southern boundary of the Triglav National Park. The lake, about 7 km ( miles) long, was formed at the confluence of the Soča and Idrijca rivers in 1938-9 after the Soča was dammed to the southwest, at Podselo, to serve the new Doblar hydroelectric power plant. The village of Most na Soči stands on a rocky spur above the lake, which is a popular destination for rowers, canoeists, anglers and walkers. The Soča rises in the Trenta Valley of the Julian Alps and runs for 85 miles (138km) through western Slovenia and northeast Italy before flowing into the Adriatic Sea at Monfalcone. The river retains its stunning emerald green or aquamarine colour throughout its length and it is now marketed to tourists as the ‘Emerald Beauty’. It is one of the very few rivers discharging into the Adriatic which support marble trout (Salmo marmoratus), a rare species of freshwater fish in the family Salmonidae.
