Clovelly Cobbled Street View: Looking Up the Deserted Hill at This Famous Cottage Lined Street: Clovelly, Devon, England.
Clovelly is a small picturesque village set on the North Devon coast. It is a famous tourist attraction due to its steep cobbled street leading down to the harbour with views of the Bristol Channel and Bideford Bay. This was a fishing village providing shelter to a small fleet. It was from Clovelly harbour that twelve fishing vessels with a total of twenty-six men on board set sail on Sunday 28 October 1838 for their fishing grounds. Sadly, after a ferocious storm in the Bristol Channel only one vessel and its crew returned. This tragic event led to the founding of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society early the following year. A few small fishing vessels together with sightseeing and angling boat trips still operates from here Historic cottages, of which 50 are architecturally listed, line the steep cobbled street and are made mainly from wattle and daub. Clovelly is privately owned, being administered by the Clovelly Estate Company. There is no vehicular access but a large car park and visitors Center is set at the top of the village. Residents typically use donkeys and hand pulled sleds for their goods. Charles Kingsley, the novelist, lived here as a child from 1831 to 1836 when his father was the local curate then rector.
