The Lion of Veilhan at Place Stalingrad, Bordeaux

Overlooking the Place Stalingrad, opposite the stone bridge and the Garonne, this immense blue lion-like protective, was directed by Veilhan for a public commission in 2005, as part of the tramway works. Made of polystyrene composites, metal frame and polyester resin, measuring 8 feet long and 6 meters high, it is a true visual landmark at the entrance of the Bastide. Oversimplified and disproportionate, that lion is between the toy, design and decor, challenging the conventions of sculpture. This is also wanted as well as the sculptor, who wanted to "sit out on the Place Stalingrad a work that crystallizes its identity and becomes a simple image and inseparable from this place. I thought about each animal sculpture. A oversized lion, an animal more present in the collective imagination in our reality. " This impression is reinforced by the monochrome color blue that blends with the sky and broke with "the brutalist style of sculpture." More than a sculpture, this work is a real urban project.
