Moheb Costandi giving a talk entitled "The body and self-consciousness", on the Mind and Body Stage, at New Scientist Live 2022

Moheb Costandi trained as a neuroscientist and works as a science writer. His feature articles and news stories have been published in leading popular science magazines and scientific journals, including New Scientist, Scientific American, Nature, and Science. He is also the author of Body Am I (MIT Press, October 2022), Neuroplasticity, (MIT Press, 2016), and 50 Human Brain Ideas You Really Need to Know (Quercus, 2013).The way we perceive our bodies is closely tied to the way we think of ourselves, but is not always accurate. Mismatches between the two underlie a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including anorexia, body dysmorphia, phantom limbs, and a rare condition called body integrity identity disorder, which makes individuals want to amputate a perfectly healthy limb. Join Moheb Costandi as he reveals modern research into the mechanisms of bodily awareness which sheds new light on such conditions, opening up new avenues for treatment. He'll discuss how this research is making us rethink the nature of consciousness in humans and other animals.
