The Catholic church was built in1851, and the new building in 1893, and has a membershipof 500. The Jewish population have a congregation knownas Shaaray Israel, but they have no synagogue. There are about seventy-five colored churches in Meck-lenburg, nearly all of which have been built since the Zion Methodist is the leading- colored denomination,having fifty churches, and issuing a religious paper from the ^.
