Sex.—Sex exercises but little influence in predisposition,although the disease is slightly more common among males thanamong females. In the 1000 cases referred to, 553 ( percent.) were in males, 447 were in females. In 3307 cases treated at the same institution, 53 per cent,were in males. Side Affected.—In disease of this as of other joints the right issomewhat more often affected than the left. In a larger number of cases treatedin the department 53 per cent, were of the right joint. Symptoms.—Tuberculous disease of the hip-joint is a chronic,insidious affection characterized by painful periods often in-duced by overstrain or injury, or that indicate more rapidadvance of the destructive process, or infection with pyogenicgerms. In the early stage of the disease the joint is simply 310 OBTHOPEDIC SUBGEBY. sensitive, and the symptoms vary with the increase of the tensionwithin the bone, the susceptibility of the patient, and the strainto which the weakened part is subjected. This sensitiveness isfirst indicated by the involuntary adaptation of the body to theweakness of the affected joint, or, as popularly expressed, thepatient favors the limb.
