Anchor Brewing Company, 1987. Two employees at the Copper Brew kettles in the Anchor Brewhouse on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, CA, USA. In July 2023 the 127-year-old San Francisco brewery announced that they were ceasing business. Anchor brewing, founded in 1896, was credited with being the oldest craft brewery in the United States. The Brewery was created by Gottlieb Brekle in San Francisco after he arrived from Germany. Then Ernst F. Baruth and Otto Schinkel Jr. bought the brewery and created Anchor Brewing. In 1906 the business was destroyed by fires in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Anchor Brewing reopened in 1907, but in 1920 Prohibition, a nationwide ban on alcohol, shut the brewery down until 1933 when the ban was repealed. The business continued into the 1960’s until it faced closure due to poor quality of Anchor’s beer. In 1965 it was purchased by Frederick Louis Maytag lll (Fritz Maytag), great-grandson of the founder of the Maytag Corporation. Maytag learned the brewing process and invested in new equipment. In 1971 produced a pale ale called steam beer, the historic beer originally produced by Anchor. Steam beer is trademarked by Anchor. In 2017 Anchor was purchased by the large Japanese Sapporo Breweries and on July 12, 2023, it was announced that Anchor would cease brewing beer.
