The church in the Roman empire before . graphy was so familiar, that eventhe slightest deviation from the natural order offended him :in that case the revision must have been made in Asia Minorby a native of the country. 7. Derbe. The site of Derbe is not established on such certainevidence as that of Lystra. The credit of reaching ap-proximate accuracy about its situation belongs again toProfessor Sterrett. His argument was that in reading theaccount [in Acts xiv.], one is impressed with the idea thatDerbe cannot be far from Lystra. f He therefore placedDerbe between the villages Bossola and Zosta, which areonly about two miles distant from each other, and theruins of which, being so near together, represent one andthe same ancient city. But after visiting the district in1890, I should say that Bossola is only a Seljuk khan andhalting-place on a great road, and that the remains at Zostaare not in situ, but have all been carried. The great site * Iconium and Antioch in place of Antioch and Wolfe Expedition, p. II. Localities of the First Journey. 55 of this district is at Gudelissin, three miles fromZosta. Professor Sterrett rightly observes that here a largemound, in every way similar to the Assyrian Tels, showsmany traces of an ancient village or town. But afterthus correctly estimating the antiquity of the site, heproceeds to say with less accuracy that most of theremains must be referred to Christian influence.* Gudelissin is the only site in this district where a cityof the style of Derbe, the stronghold of the robberAntipater, could be situated. The remains at Zosta havebeen taken from it, so that it now presents a bare andpoor appearance ; but excavation in the mound, which isobviously to a great extent artificial, would certainly revealmany traces of a very old city, of the style of Tyanaor Zela. The mound belongs to that class which Straboentitles mounds of Semiramis, and which are a suresign of ancient origin and Oriental chara
