Italian country folk welcoming French soldiers following the Battle of Solferino in Italy on 24 June 1859. The Battle resulted in the victory of the allied French Army under Napoleon III and Piemont-Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II against the Austrian Army under Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861 when King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia was proclaimed King of Italy – until 1946, when civil discontent led an institutional referendum to abandon the monarchy and form the modern Italian Republic.
