Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533 - 1603). Engraving created in the 1700s by Michael van der Gucht (1660-1725), after a portrait by Sir Anthony More (c. 1520 - c. 1576).

Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603). Original copperplate engraving by Michael van der Gucht (1660-1725), after a portrait by Sir Anthony More (c. 1520-c. 1576). This engraving was first used in the 1740 edition of 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon; his history of the English Civil War is frequently referred to as 'Clarendon's Rebellion’. Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She succeeded to the throne in 1558 following the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I. Michael van der Gucht or Vandergucht was a Flemish engraver, born in Antwerp, who worked for most of his career in England. Sir Anthony More, also known as Antoon or Anthonis Mor, was born in Utrecht. His English work included a portrait of Queen Mary I for her bridegroom, Phillip II of Spain.
