His profession inter-feres with her pleasures, he being calledaway as they are leaving for a recep-tion, and another time having to leavea gay dinner, etc. Diphtheria breaksout in the poor districts and he volun-teers his services. His wife strenuouslyobjects, as she fears he will bring thedisease home. He stands firm in hisduty, but his child becomes infected anddies. The mother is very bitter and be-comes wildly extravagant, finally ruin-. ing him. She then goes back to hermother. The old-fashioned mothertakes her to task and succeeds in show-ing her that her place is by her hus-bands side, and that she has been avery unsuccessful wife. Repentant, shedecides to make up for the past andgoes to his bare little office, arriving inhis absence. A poor, distracted woman comes inseeking the doctor for her sick doctors wife sees a chance to re-deem herself, and leaves a note for thedoctor to call at once at the home ofthe poor woman. She goes there her-self, cleans up the squalid place, buysnecessary things, etc. The doctor gets the message and hur-ries to the sick child, whose life hesaves. Over its bedside the estrangedhusband and wife are reunited, andstart life anew with perfect understand-ing to light the way.
