Fantoni's astronomical treatise. Title page of the work 'De ratione' (1560) by the Italian mathematics lecturer Filippo Fantoni (circa 1530-1591). Fantoni taught mathematics at the University of Pisa from 1560 to 1567, and then from 1582 to 1589, when he was succeeded by one of his students, Galileo Galilei. 'De ratione' summarised astronomical and geographical knowledge, covering classical and medieval authors, from Aristotle to Ptolemy to Johannes de Sacrobosco. The text is in Latin, with the title at top, followed by a lengthy description and the author's name above the artwork. At bottom is the publication year and location (Florence).
