A late 19th century view of a local taking Cormorants eggs on the Farne Islands, a group of islands off the coast of Northumberland, England. They were first recorded in 651, when they became home to Saint Aidan, followed by Saint Cuthbert who died there in 687. The islands were used by hermits intermittently until the last hermit died on the islands in 1246. The islands are also associated with Grace Darling, daughter of the Longstone lighthouse-keeper William Darling, who both rescued nine people from the wreck of the Forfarshire in a strong gale and thick fog, the vessel having run aground
