At theattack of the last-named place, he was made a brigadier-gen-eral by King William, who commanded in person. As a re-ward for his eminent services in Ireland and Flanders, KingWilliam, in January 1696, advanced him to the dignity of apeer of Scotland by the title of earl of Orkney, viscount ofKirkwall, and Baron Dechmont; and his countess, the sister ofEdward, first earl of Jersey, got a grant, under the greatseal of Ireland, of almost all the private estates of KingJames in that country. Upon the accession of Queen Anne, Lord Orkney was. in1702, promoted to the rank of major-general, and in 1703 tothat of lieutenant-general, and was likewise made a knightof the Thistle. He afterwards served under the duke of .Marl-borough, and by his gallantry contributed to the victories ofBlenheim, Ramillies, Oudenard, and Malplaquet. In 1708 hewas elected one of the sixteen peers of Scotland, and was re-chosen at ever- general election till 1734. In 1710, his lordshipwas sworn of the privy council, and made general of the foot inthe Low Countries. In 1712 he received the colonelcy of theroval regiment of Fusileers, and again in Flanders under theduke of Ormond. In 1714 he was appointed gentleman ex-traordinary of the bedchamber to George the First, and soonafter governor of Virginia. Subsequently he was constitutedgovernor of Edinburgh cast
