Corn smut infection. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from a corn (Zea mays) plant infected with corn smut fungus (Ustilago maydis). Corn smut is a parasitic fungus that infects grasses, including cereals like corn. The fungal spores (brown) overwinter in the plant cells and later germinate to produce basidiospores.
