Was born in Connecticut, son of CommodoreThomas Holdup Stevens. Appointed midshipmanfrom Connecticut in 1836, and in 1849 became a lieu-tenant ; was ordered to the command of the Ottawaearly in 1862. In this vessel took part in the actionof the squadron at Port Royal, capture of Forts Walpuand Beauregard, battle of Port Royal Perry, and thedifferent engagements with Tatnalls fleet. Formany months after was commander of the Ottawa inthe waters of Florida. Received commission as com-mander in July, 1862, and commanded the Maratanzaduring the battle of Malvern Hill. In command ofMonitor for a short time; next commanded Sonomain the West India Squadron and captured severalblockade runners. In command of the monitor Pa-tapsco, and on September 8, 1863, commanded theboat assault on Fort Sumter. Next commanded theOneida, and in August, 1864, took command of theWinnebago, in which
