At first therewas difficulty in feedingthe turkeys, owing totheir size and strength, but the operator finallyovercame this by plac-ing the fowls on a lowstand so that theirheads were on a levelwith the nozzle of thecramming machine. Itis stated that after aday or two the turkeysbecame accustomed tothis manner of feeding, and when meal timescame they showed mucheagerness to mount thestand and receive theirshare of the food. Thefeeding period coveredthree weeks; the liirdswere hatched in thespring and weighed anaverage of seventeenp o u ti d s apiece, andmade an average gain. Proof that turkeys fatten much better when kept inpens has been secured by the Manitoba experiment sta-tion. It took two lots of , exactly alike and gavethem the .same rations for six weeks, two parts of wheat, one of oats, and one of barley. At the end of the test itwas found the turkeys in the pens had gained an averageof a trifle over four pounds each, while those allowedtheir liberty added only a little more than 1% poundseach to their weight. Most of the gain was made in thefirst three weeks. The penned turkeys when dressedshrank 5 per cent less than the others and were moreattractive in every way.
