In 2004 the artist Marzia Colonna was commissioned to make a statue of Saint Aldhelm for Sherborne Abbey to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the churches foundation. In 2005 the original version of the statue was installed outside the building, in a niche above the main entrance to the Abbey. The statue proved very popular and subsequently a second casting was made and placed inside the Abbey. Marzia Colonna was born in Pisa in Italy but she now lives and works in West Dorset.
