Blue sky 'urban canyon' portrait Temple Bar Building granite skyscrapers above Joralemon Street, from Borough Hall, Brooklyn, NY
Joralemon Street at Court Street from the Brooklyn Borough Hall, out of shot behind the camera. The 1901 Temple Bar Building, with its Beaux-Arts twin copper cupolas (at 44 Court Street), was, at one time, the tallest building in Brooklyn. Population increase and transportation improvements caused building heights in Downtown Brooklyn to rise onward of the 1890s. When built, it was hoped the Temple Bar Building (hence its name) would attract New York's top lawyers. It was also hoped the area of new skyscrapers centred on Brooklyn Borough Hall (now referred to as the 'Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District') would become a financial and commercial district to rival Wall Street.
