Blood sugar level testing in diabetes. Diabetic woman using a lancet to take a blood sample from her arm. Diabetes is a condition where the body is resistant to or fails to produce the insulin needed to break down sugars in the blood. The device in the foreground is used to test the blood for the levels of the simple sugar glucose. Testing is usually carried out on blood from the finger tips, but these sites can become sensitive over time. Taking blood samples from elsewhere is known as alternate site testing (AST). If blood sugar levels are high, an injection of insulin may be needed.
