The early 1900s caption reads: "UPRISING OF THE VIENNESE, MARCH 13, 1848.—This date is a most important one in Austrian eyes. On this day the people rose against the Emperor's unpopular minister, Metternich, who had long denied them a representative government. Headed by the university students, they repulsed the government troops, and continued parading the streets with cries of "Down with Metternich," until the minister resigned his position. His palace was burned, and he fled the country in disguise in a washerwoman's cart."
