The subject of this sketch was born in Pe-nobscot Co., Me., Nov. 14, 1837. He receivedbut a common-school education. At the age ofseventeen, he was apprenticed to learn t he tradeof iron molder. lie worked at his trade untilFeb. .>. 1862, when he enlisted in the 1st R. , and served his country up to July. participated in the battles of Bull Run,Winchester, Shepherdstown, Cedar Creek, lie-sides many other importanl engagements. Hewas in the now historic campaign of the Shen-andoah Valley.
