Sexually transmitted disease. Conceptual image of Greek statues of two lovers seen inside a sexually transmitted virus. The risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease (STD), or venereal disease, is greatly reduced by limiting the number of sexual partners or using barrier contraception such as a condom. STDs include HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which can cause AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome); hepatitis B and herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus. Both HIV and hepatitis B can also be transmitted in infected blood. Viruses have nucleic acid genetic material within a protein capsid coat studded with surface proteins.
