Corrigan's button cautery with spirit burner, dating from around 1850, from Ireland. Cautery was a process by which tissues and arteries were heated to very high temperatures in order to coagulate the blood and minimise bleeding during procedures such as amputations. The metal disc was heated in the flame of the spirit burner and then applied.
