The Pavilion’S 50 Ft Span Consists Of A 7 In Thick Concrete Slab That Folds To Fulfill Aesthetic, Structural And Mechanical Requirements. It’S Span And Support Leading Edges Are Orthogonal And Directly Relate To The Frame And Infill Vocabulary Of The Existing Late Modernist Buildings Framing The Courtyard. Towards The End Of The Span The Amplitude Is Deepest Where The Lateral Forces And Storm Water Runoff Are Greatest. Because This Courtyard Functions As The Heart Of The Arts On Campus, We Worked With The Client To Develop A Way To Visibly Express What “The Arts” At Ubc Means—Essentially To Create A Visual Identity Within The Courtyard. Each Of The Faculty’S 25 Different Departments And Schools Supplied A Significant Thought Relating To Their Field Of Study And Typeset These Quotations Into 30 Ft Rings In The Bottom Of The Reflecting Pool—Over 8,000 Characters In 11 Languages.
