When Gen. Shieldswas wounded at Cerro Gordo, he succeeded to the com-mand of the brigade. Re-elected to Congress on hisreturn. Removed to California, 1852, and to Oregon,186(1, and was elected U. S. Senator. Raised a regimentand entered the Union Army as a WhileleadinL ^is brigade at ihe battle of Balls Blufl, Va., hewas kiUeJ, Oct. 21, 1861.
