GSK3B enzyme complex with kinase inhibitor. Illustration of the GSK3B enzyme (blue) complexed with a molecule of the kinase inhibitor drug alsterpaull

GSK3B enzyme complex with kinase inhibitor. Illustration of the GSK3B enzyme (blue) complexed with a molecule of the kinase inhibitor drug alsterpaullone (upper left). This drug is blocking the normal function of the enzyme. Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3B) is an enzyme produced in humans by a gene of the same name. It is involved in the biochemistry of glycogen synthase, a key enzyme in glycogenesis, one of the major metabolic processes by which the body stores energy. As well as energy metabolism, GSK3B is involved in neuronal cell development, and body pattern formation. This enzyme and gene is being studied in relation to a range of neurological, psychiatric and inflammatory conditions, as well as some forms of cancer.
