Herman's studios, 198 High Road, Wood Green, London, N22 The introduction of men's conscription in 1916 made the need for female workers urgent and they were employed in many of the jobs traditionally done by men such as working for the post office as postwomen and telegram girls. Although women had worked behind the counter in post offices, they did not deliver the mail before WW1. This dates the photo between 1916 -1918. In 1916 postwomen were issued with a blue straw hat, blue serge coat and skirt and boots. The GPO hat badge can be seen and the number on the lapel of the coat is the staff number.
