External factors trigger the stimulation of the hypothalamus (green area), which triggers the stimulation of neurons innervating the arteries in the meninges (green area round the brain). These neurons release neuropeptides in the lining of these arteries, causing inflammation and dilatation, causing the migrainous pain.
