In 1856 he removed to Tar-rytown, which has since been his home, and threeyens later became engaged in the hardware business,in which he continued till 1861. He has been, duringthe whole of his business life, closely connected withthe public affairs of the town and county. Whileliving at Irvington he was a member of the board ofeducation, and has held the same position at Tarry-town. In 1866 he was appointed school commissionertot the second district of Westchester County by Wil-liam II. Robertson, then county judge. In 187H hewas elected a trustee of the village of Tarrytown. In1865 he was elected trustee of the Westchester County.
