Pyramid at Memphis, illustration. An engraving showing a section through a pyramid at Memphis, capital city of ancient Egypt. The diagram shows tunnels and burial chambers. Pyramids were built as tombs for the Pharoahs and their consorts. This illustration is taken from Travels in Egypt and Nubia by Frederik Ludwig Norden, a Danish naval captain and explorer, and fellow of the Royal Society. The work was published in 1755.
