Thomas Crapper. Portrait of Thomas Crapper (1837- 1910), British sanitary engineer and inventor of the modern water closet toilet. Crapper's design was the first to include a cistern containing a float and arm which cut off the water supply once the cistern had refilled. Crapper's toilets were made in Chelsea, London, and sold as \Crapper's Valveless Waste Preventer\". The firm received a Royal Warrant from Edward VII and Crapper made his fortune. He also exported toilets to America, where his name became shortened to become a slang term for excrement."
