Sun-dogs. Silhouetted figure beside a tent watching sun-dogs over Antarctica. Also known as parhelia or mock suns, this optical atmospheric effect is seen as bright areas on either side of the Sun. It is caused by the refraction, or bending, of sunlight within hexagonal ice crystals falling through the atmosphere.
