Abdominal muscle. Computer artwork of an oblique anterior view of one of the layers of muscle (red) of the abdominal cavity. The abdominal internal oblique muscles form a middle layer between the external oblique and transverse muscles. They are a paired set of muscles (one each side of the body) and compress the abdomen to force air out of the lungs in exhalation. They are also used in rotation of the torso. They join to the pelvic bones on their lower edge, and the lower three ribs on their upper edge. Like other abdominal muscles, they attach to fascia (not shown) at the front (linea alba) and back (lumbodorsal) of the abdomen.
